11 monotypes, special printing ink on paper, 2022 — presented as a solo exhibition, "Ndembu," at SOMA Studio, Tel Aviv, November 18 – December 1, 2023.
2022 was a year of fear and paralysis. I began making these monotypes using the weight of my own body — the press had been left behind in another country — turning the act of printing into a literal and metaphorical way of stamping myself in place.
It echoes a practice of the Ndembu people, who gather and rhythmically stomp to release feeling into the earth. Both share the same need — to reconnect with the ground beneath us.
I'm drawn to the smeared, undefined edges monotype gives, and to the fact that each print exists only once. The series holds two bodies of work side by side: soft studies of the female form, and harder, multi-layered self-portraits.
